Basic Tips for Growing Grass

Whether you need advice about thatch control or you just need basic watering and mowing tips, check out our help grass care tips page today for tons of helpful suggestions and thoughtful advice. Please also see below for basic tips for growing grass:

  • Keep it Consistent
When it comes to growing grass, consistent care is key. Failure to invest in long-term turf care can open the window to any number of problems in your lawn. It's also important to give your grass the fertilizing lawn care and control treatments it needs based on the season. New lawn care for growing grass in the spring has different needs than other maintenance services in the fall.

  • Practice Proper Mowing
We're always surprised at the number of people who don't know that the way you mow your lawn can either make growing grass easier or harder. First of all, Spring-Green always recommends that you leave grass clippings on the lawn. Not only can this help recycle important lawn fertilizing nutrients, but it doesn't contribute to landfills either (where lawn clippings have been estimated to take up to 10% of all space).

Next, remember to keep it high. You never want to remove more than one third of the total blade height when mowing, or you could chop off the food-producing parts of the grass blade and end up with a brown lawn instead of a green one! The only exception to this rule is in late fall, when you want to remove new growth that is more susceptible to winter lawn diseases. Last but not least, keeping that mower blade sharp also helps with growing grass!

  • Water Responsibly
As with most things, watering is best done in moderation. One of the most important things to remember when growing grass is that it's better to water deeply (down to a depth of 6 inches) and less frequently, than lightly and more often. Otherwise, you'll encourage a shallow root system in your turf. Night watering is also not recommended because that's the time when many tree and lawn diseases flourish.

  • Control Thatch
What is thatch and why is it bad for growing grass? Thatch is that matted layer of organic matter (stems, roots, and other debris) that forms on lawns above the soil. A small amount of thatch is normal and healthy in every lawn, but if too much accumulates, it can develop into a breeding ground for insects and diseases. It also makes growing grass harder because roots will latch on the thatchy outer layer instead of the nutrient-rich soil underneath.

  • Lawn Aeration

Lawn aeration and growing grass go hand in hand. Besides maintaining a consistent lawn fertilization and weed control program, core aeration is one of best things you can do to facilitate growth of healthy, resilient turf. It reduces thatch (see above) while also freeing up the root zone of your grass to make way for air, water, and fertilizer. Soil compaction can also cause turf thinning, but lawn aeration truly opens the soil to enable growing grass.
