Moss growth is a common problem for many lawns here in the Pacific Northwest. Lawns are more likely to develop thick patches of moss because of the extended cool, cloudy and wet weather. These weather conditions allow the moss to spread out and grow throughout the thin areas in your lawn
Shady areas with poor drainage and air circulation are the prime locations for moss to take hold and spread out. It does not choke out the turf but will grow between the existing turf grass plants. Moss prevents healthy turf from filling in areas as it forms dense patches.
Yearly applications of iron will help control moss. The moss will turn black and should be raked up and removed to allow the exiting turf to grow back. Your lawn will be thicker and healthier without the moss robbing the turf of moisture and vital nutrients.
