Just What Are Weeds, Anyway?

The relationship you have with your lawn is special. You get up at five in the morning to water it. You keep to a tight mowing schedule. You learned how to do lawn aeration. You learned how to use the right lawn fertilizer. And the added professional lawn care assistance paid off, too. Sure you've spent a lot of time on it, but you when you look across your yard, it feels good to see the fruits of your labor.

Even a well-maintained lawn, however, can have the potential for weed control problems. In fact, rare is the lawn that doesn't have to plan for weed prevention.

In the strictest sense, a weed can really be considered any type of plant or grass that has decided to grow where it is not wanted. When specifically talking about lawn weed control, we can narrow our definition of weed down to any plant in your lawn that is not the same grass type as your lawn.

In general, weeds fall into two distinct categories:

  • Dicots - These weeds are considered broadleaf weeds and come in nearly 200,000 known varieties.

  • Monocots - Grassy weeds are known as monocots and number right around 60,000 known types.

So that leaves you against about 260,000. Not to worry, though; because you've got something they haven't got: knowledgeable and expert support from Spring-Green.

Weed Control Prevention and Care

Preventative Weed ControlThe first question you have to ask when it comes to weed control should be, "How did this thing get here?" Well, weed seeds come from just about everywhere. They can be transported by birds, bees, and other flying animals. You and your family can also bring weed seeds into your lawn on your shoes. And don't try throwing resistance to the wind, because the wind is carrying weed seeds as well. So weed prevention through seed prevention may be an exercise in futility. The next approach to weed prevention, then, is keeping the weed seeds from growing once they are on your lawn. And, yes, this is an aspect of weed control you can control.

You can change your lawn care slightly to prevent the conditions that encourage the weed growth. These weed control practices may include adjusting your mower blade height, changing how often you mow, altering the period between irrigations (if you irrigate), adjusting your fertilizer amounts or frequency, and considering lawn aeration.

Weeds, however, can be a warning that there may be some problems in your lawn that are allowing the weeds to take root in the first place. For instance, knotweed grows in areas where the soil is very compacted. Removing the knotweed may create an aesthetic change, but without addressing the soil compaction issue, through lawn aeration perhaps, you can expect the knotweed to keep coming back. And worse, your grass won't be growing to its full potential.

How Weed Control Works

commercial lawn careThere is really no polite way to remove weeds from your lawn. Pulling them can be straining on your back and shake loose weed seeds back onto your lawn. Indeed, destroying weeds is the more effective option when it comes to weed control.

Through a process called translocation, weeds ingest weed control agents and take them right down into their roots. Weed control materials encourage a greatly accelerated cell growth in weeds. The cells in the weeds grow super fast until they simply explode.

For optimum results, however, your lawn will most likely need several applications a season. At Spring-Green, we can customize the ideal weed control materials and application schedule for your local climate.

Taking Weed Control to the Lawn

After you or your local Spring-Green professionals have applied the proper weed control material, you'll want to wait a while before watering or mowing so the weed control materials can really do their thing. For optimum lawn weed control, we recommend you wait at least two hours before watering again. You should also wait at least 24 hours before the next mowing.

And remember, lawn weed control is a process, not a one-time task. As new seeds and conditions can change, new weeds can spring up. A regular weed control program from Spring-Green lawn services can help keep your lawn thick, healthy, and free of weeds.
