Tips and Tricks to planning your next garden

Planting season for 2015 has started, sort of. It may seem strange to begin thinking about planting at this time of year, especially when the high temperature today won't even reach the freezing mark, but this is the time to do so. Besides (if you live in the northern states), there really isn’t much else to do at this time of year besides going shopping, watching sports on TV, and eating leftover Christmas cookies and candy. So let’s think about how to plan a garden instead. One of the difficulties that I often experience, and I am sure many of you have as well, is deciding on what to plant in the spring. How do I even plan a garden? is a question that has been asked many times. This is where seed catalogues can help, even if the pictures that are displayed in the catalogues always look about 100 times better than anything I ever grow. Still, it is fun to look through them and think about watching your garden grow next summer. The other problem I have is planting too much into too little space, and this is where knowing a few garden design tips can really come in handy. A website that can help with this problem, Gardener’s Supply Company, offers a great tool to assist you in planning your garden for 2015. The site allows you to plan your garden out on your computer screen using a grid system. You can adjust the size and shape to match your personal space and then add in the types of plants you want to grow. It also gives a description of the plant and how much space each plant requires. Once you’ve planned out your garden, you can save the design, print it out, or even e-mail it. I can now lay out my garden and purchase the proper number of plants or seeds I need for the garden without overcrowding. Another great thing about these garden design tips is that planning ahead helps relieve some spring-time stress, providing some winter fun for you while you daydream about your beautiful soon-to-come garden. Happy planning… and planting… eventually. As you begin planning the perfect garden, don’t forget about the rest of your yard. What issues did you notice in the summer and fall?
