Questions You Should Ask Before Hiring a Lawn Care Company

questions future lawn care provider On April 16, the Chicago Tribune published an article titled How to Hire a Lawn-Care Company.  As I was reading the article, I quickly realized that article was addressing the maintenance side of lawn care and not the programs and services that Spring-Green or other lawn care companies offer. There is an entirely different set of questions to ask a potential lawn care company you may be considering.

2 questions I recommend asking:

  • Are all lawn service professionals that may service my lawn appropriately licensed by the state to apply lawn care chemicals?
  • Do the lawn care professionals receive on-going training on application techniques as well as training on technical topics such as proper cultural practices, common insect and disease identification and control, and weed identification and control?
The products that are traditionally used to control pests, pose no unreasonable risk when applied by licensed and trained professionals. If label rates are not followed, personal protective equipment is misused or not used and follow-up instructions after an application are not included at the time of the application, a hazardous situation can develop.

Questions to ask when determining the number of applications the company offers:

questions about service
  • How many applications are included with the recommended lawn care program?
  • Can less than the recommended number of applications be taken?
  • Can an application be skipped?
  • Is there a guarantee?
  • Will they reapply products if not satisfied with results from an application?
The next question I recommend asking concerns the programs and services the company may offer. If grubs have been a problem in your lawn in previous years, you want to make sure that the company offers the service. The same is true for other lawn problems that require separate treatments like disease control, flea and tick control or mosquito control. Think about all the different services that you may want to have and learn if the company you are investigating offers them.

Questions to ask regarding payments and contacting the company:

Questions for lawn care provider
  • Can I pay online or manage my account by going to the company’s website?
  • Are there options to prepay for the year?
  • Whom do I contact if I have a concern about my lawn?
  • What is the best way to contact the company?
  • Can I contact the office by e-mail?
  • Can I cancel the service at any time?
As with any service or product, it is always a good idea to ask questions. Sometimes we don’t think of all the questions we should ask. Hopefully, these questions will provide a great basis for making sure the company you choose will meet your needs.
