Lawn Talk with Harold Enger – Podcast Transcription

Episode: Perimeter Pest Control

Tim Kauffold: Welcome to Lawn Talk, I’m your host Tim Kauffold. Lawn Talk is a series of conversations with Spring-Green lawn care professionals. Joining me is Harold Enger. Harold has worked in the Green Industry for nearly 30 years and is a Certified Turfgrass and Ornamental Landscape professional. Today on Lawn Talk we’re talking about perimeter pest control.  And so, Harold, I think the first question is, what exactly is perimeter pest control?

Harold Enger: Well, it’s a relatively new service that we are offering. We’ve been doing this for about three or four years now. Basically, we spray a band treatment of an insect control around the base of your home. It’s about two feet up on the side of your house, about three feet out into your lawn or landscape area, and we go all the way around the house.

What this does is it sets up a barrier, so that when an insect crawls through this area it will absorb some of the insect control material that it comes in contact with, which will control it,  and keep it from coming into your house.

Tim: And do you actually have to go inside the house to spray anything?

Harold: No. We don’t do anything inside the house. It’s purely on the outside, because what we are trying to control are those insects that move in and out. A lot of insects move in and out of the house on a regular basis. They may be going inside to escape weather extremes, or they may be coming back out to look for food, depending on what they are feeding on and what type of insect it is.

Tim: What are some examples of the insects that might be moving in and out of the house that this would take care of?

Harold: Right, you know we aren’t doing things like termite control. That’s not part of this program. What we’re looking at are what we call nuisance pests, so it’s things like ants, spiders, earwigs, and some of the different crawling insects that crawl in and out—millipedes and centipedes—that sort of thing, that crawls in and out of your house that can get in very little cracks and crevices that you don’t see in your house. This will help keep them from coming in and out.

It’s a very good service for somebody that maybe having a problem with insects, especially things like spiders that come in, make spider webs in the corners, and so forth. Once this service is done, you see very few of those.

It’s not going to eliminate everything.  That’s just not possible. That’s not our goal to eliminate everything, but it will definitely keep those insects from becoming a nuisance in your home.
