Silverfish

pest-library-zoom-silverfish

Silverfish are small, teardrop insects that are brown-gray or bluish-silver in color. Silverfish can range in size from just under a 1/2” to 3/4”inches.

HABITAT

Silverfish live in dark, damp areas such as basements, attics, bathrooms, kitchens and laundry rooms. Silverfish prefer a high carbohydrate diet such as shampoos, book glue, cellulose, linen, silk and dead insects. Silverfish sometimes live in unopened food packages.

Silverfish are nocturnal insects, but quickly move when disturbed. You may not notice silverfish’s damage until the insect is well-established in your home.

THE DANGER ANTS POSE TO HUMANS

Silverfish destroy papers, clothing and wallpaper. You can prevent silverfish damage by controlling the humidity in your home along with caulking crawl spaces, open vents and baseboards. A clean house limits silverfish’s food sources too.
