Definition

A soil that contains a pH of 7.0 or higher, sometimes referred to as sweet soil. Determination of an alkaline soil is based on the concentration of hydrogen (h) ions; the less hydrogen, the more alkaline the soil. Knowing whether your soil is alkaline or not, is crucial to effective yard care, as some plants will not do well in soil that is too alkaline. This type of soil is typically found in dryer climates.
